红杏视频 architecture student wins St Machar community garden project
Residents in the St Machar area of Aberdeen will soon be able to relax in a brand new community garden, after a design competition was won by a talented 红杏视频 architecture student.

The competition was run by INsideOUT and set the brief of designing a community garden with a focus on biodiversity and engagement with local schools.

The garden will be located on the site of Hillcrest Housing Association鈥檚 St Machar Road development of 138 affordable homes, which is currently under construction by .

Rebecca Hawley, a second year architecture student at 红杏视频鈥檚 Scott Sutherland School of Architecture and Built Environment, was picked as the winner by a panel of judges for her design 鈥楿rban Woodland Rounds鈥.

Rebecca鈥檚 design creates a link between the site鈥檚 urban surroundings and a calming woodland setting and acts as a focal point within the community for interaction and education.

Taking inspiration from the shapes and curved lines of natural woodland features combined with the straight sharp lines of urban settings, Urban Woodland Rounds sees winding paths, woodland plantings and circular social areas interacting with straight sharp lined vertical and horizontal elements.

Rebecca commented: 鈥淔ollowing meetings and talking to a few members of the community the conclusion was made that more community interaction was needed.

鈥淚t was in the community鈥檚 interest that a play area was added for younger children who will benefit from scattered fairy gardens and educational hubs which will house a bee and butterfly garden and bug hotels.

鈥淢y design makes use of space, sight, plantings and colour to support community needs. While holding 4 main areas such as an enclosed seating area, open seating area, planting area and a children鈥檚 play area the design still leaves space to walk dogs and take a stroll.鈥

She added: 鈥淭he experience is surreal, and it hasn鈥檛 quite sunk in yet that what I have been designing and drawing on paper all summer will be brought to life. I am over the moon that my design has been chosen after being given the opportunity that not many people in their early stages of their architectural education have been given.

鈥淚 really can鈥檛 thank Hillcrest, Robertson鈥檚 and the other competitors for the opportunity, guidance and support through all the stages of the competition.鈥

David Zwirlein, Hillcrest Director of Development and New Business, added: 鈥淎fter a number of months of hard work, Rebecca has produced a tremendous design that certainly ticked all of the boxes of the design brief. Once completed, the design will form a landmark within the community and isn鈥檛 just a fantastic piece of art, but also a place where Hillcrest residents and the wider community can meet and interact.

鈥淗illcrest is delighted that we鈥檝e had the opportunity to have such an inspiring piece of functional art installed as part of our development.鈥

Neil Donald, regional director at Robertson Partnership Homes, said: 鈥淎 community garden has been at the heart of our St Machar Road development for Hillcrest Housing Association and it has been a pleasure having students from 红杏视频 help us with their great designs. The feedback from local residents at community events has been overwhelmingly positive and Rebecca Hawley鈥檚 design is a worthy winner. Robertson Partnership Homes is delighted to support this project and congratulates all students who took part.鈥
