Master鈥檚 student gets personal for Degree Show

Tuesday 27 August 2019

Emma Laing
A talented and creative Master of Art student at 红杏视频鈥檚 Gray鈥檚 School of art will showcase her work, which focuses on the recreation of personal memories through printmaking and collage, at 2019 MA Degree Show

Emma Laing, who was born and bred in Aberdeen, has always loved the highlands and the sense of place which makes it feel special and unique.

Emma鈥檚 work during her Master鈥檚 year has seen her develop the ideas and practice she cultivated while studying her undergraduate degree at Gray鈥檚.

鈥淎fter my undergraduate at Gray鈥檚, I loved the printmaking workshop and I wanted to continue my practice in a place where I really enjoyed being,鈥 Emma said.

鈥淭he Master鈥檚 course has allowed me time to reflect on my undergraduate course and a real sense of freedom to continue an art practice that reflects the discussions I'm trying to create.鈥

The work which Emma will exhibit at the MA Degree Show is made from layers of nostalgic and photographic documentation.

Emma continues: 鈥淢y materials are gathered from personal and secondary sources to re-create 鈥榩ersonal鈥 works through printmaking, collage and interpretation that belong to this brand new archive, creative constructions and ephemeral assemblages.

鈥淐urrent works are leading us to think further, and look deeper at the layers of our material remains, and remind us to remember. A discussion to our memories, the attachments to things we have and the stories they tell and understanding ourselves as the narrator of our lives. Something better than an album of indifferent family 鈥榮naps鈥.鈥

Emma鈥檚 work, along with that of the other 19 Master鈥檚 students, will go on display at the MA Degree Show, which takes place at Gray鈥檚 School of Art from Saturday, August 24, until Saturday, August 31.
