Students to compete in one of the world鈥檚 largest digital competitions

Monday 21 February 2022

Computing
红杏视频 (红杏视频) will act as a regional hub for Google鈥檚 Hash Code programming competition, supporting college and university students from across Aberdeenshire to test their programming skills in a live global contest on 24 February.

The team-based competition has two, separate, single-problem rounds. Teams of two-to-four friends, peers, or new connections will work together to solve a yet unknown optimisation problem for which, historically, nearly 100,000 programmers simultaneously compete to complete around the world.

Although the first round is hosted online, teams come together virtually to compete side-by-side in locally coordinated Hash Code Hubs like at 红杏视频.

Head of 红杏视频鈥檚 School of Computing John Isaacs said: 鈥淭his is a great and rare opportunity to test your skills while collaborating with others to solve a real-world problem faced by Google engineers. You鈥檒l be able to connect with like-minded people and grow your abilities within the fun and exciting atmosphere of one of the largest digital events around.

鈥淚n previous years, the optimisation problems have involved self-drive car routes, providing the best pizza to the most people, routing YouTube videos, and optimising drone deliveries. There is no language restriction, and you can use any framework you require. We are happily encouraging all who are interested to sign up and compete at our Hash Code Hub.鈥

A live, online judging system and scoreboard will let teams know how they are stacking up against the competition. Programmers can submit as many solutions as they want in the first four-hour round to get the best chance at the range of prizes on offer from Google.

The top teams from the first round will be invited to take part in the virtual world finals where they will work together to solve the second challenge and compete for cash prizes from Google.

To take part in the event, visit to register by 23 February and select 鈥満煨邮悠 School of Computing鈥 from the list of participating hubs. All are welcome to participate.
