Spousal-caregivers of UK Armed Forces veterans with service-related mental health problems
Research Opportunities
Summary
Family caregivers are at increased risk of physical, psychological, and social suffering in the course of providing care for mentally ill family members. This may be particularly the case for spousal-caregivers who, due to their emotional and physical proximity to the care-receiver, at increased risk of suffering from burden of care, clinically significant levels of distress and depression. However, while the effect of caregiving has been well documented in the context of civilian spousal-caregivers, little is known about the problems faced by spousal-carers for veterans with service-related mental-health. This is problematic as veterans may differ in their experience of mental-health problems related to the unique obligations implied in their military contracts, and the linked triggers for those mental health issues. The present project will address this gap in knowledge by providing examining spousal-carers for UK Armed Forces veterans with military-related mental-health problems. Here, the terms 鈥渟pouses鈥, 鈥渟pousal-carers鈥 and 鈥渟pousal-caregivers鈥 refer to those who self-identify as partners who care for UK Armed Forces veterans with service-related mental health problems, including all types of relationships and genders (married, not married, heterosexual, LGBTQA+, etc.). Therefore, the proposed project aims:
- To explore challenges and barriers that spousal-caregivers of UK Armed Forces veterans with service-related mental health problems face
- To identify what types of support spousal-caregivers of UK Armed Forces veterans with service-related mental health problems feel they need to maintain and improve their own wellbeing
- To set up and implement interventions that address challenges and barriers faced by spousal-caregivers of UK Armed Forces veterans with service-related mental health problems
- To evaluate these interventions to understand their potential benefit
