Staying well while staying at home: study well online

Rachel McGregor
Academic Support Lead Rachel McGregor shares why the university is well placed to support students with their studies online, and shows that CampusMoodle is the university in virtual form.

ºìÐÓÊÓƵ’s virtual learning environment CampusMoodle plays a vital role in the student learning experience and this is especially true in the current lockdown when courses have moved wholly online. With more than 40,000 log ins just over the course of last week, CampusMoodle has been critical in enabling learning and teaching activities to continue while staff and students are working and studying from home.

CampusMoodle is much more than a repository of information: it is the university online - a space where students can engage with lecturers, fellow students, and course content, as well as access help and advice from support services. This virtual campus is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and provides a place where students can focus on their learning, free from other distractions.

Like the physical campus, some parts of the virtual learning environment will be more familiar to us than others; and like the buildings on campus, it’s what goes on in these spaces that matters most. There are many ways that meaningful interactions can take place through CampusMoodle and now is a great time to get to know its range of tools. For students, this might mean posting to a discussion forum to stay in touch with classmates and share ideas. For staff, this could be facilitating a synchronous session via Blackboard Collaborate Ultra.

When trying something new, detailed information on how to use the various features is available in the CampusMoodle User Guides for and . The CampusMoodle Helpdesk Team are also happy to support and can be reached at campus@rgu.ac.uk or on 01224 262233.

One area which staff and students are encouraged to visit is the new page. This page has been developed for students in response to the COVID-19 outbreak and provides a central hub for support information relating to studying online, undertaking online assessments, and promoting wellbeing. It provides the landing page for the newly launched StudyWell programme, a series of online webinars supporting students to take control of their learning and take care of themselves over the coming weeks. An online drop-in also operates through the page at set times daily, where students can access one-to-one support and advice.

Although we’re staying at home, CampusMoodle helps staff and students to stay connected with each other as part of the RGU learning community and there’s lots to explore.
