Inspirational student is embracing challenges after accident

Joanna Robertson
Gray's student, Joanna Robertson, is looking ahead to returning to university after an accident which left her unable to walk.

Joanna Robertson is fourth year student at ³Ò°ù²¹²â’s, whose life was turned upside down last year when she was involved in a serious road accident which has left her unable to walk and resulted in her studies being suspended to allow time for recovery.

She is now preparing to return to ³Ò°ù²¹²â’s where she will complete her 3D Design Degree once the university reopens post-COVID-19 lockdown.

Joanna commented: “Like many people lockdown is really getting tedious, yet it has helped give me the time that I needed to adjust to my new lifestyle and learn new skills.â€

“The support at university have been nothing but brilliant so far. When my course leader, Daniel Sutherland, was informed about the accident he came to visit me after my ten-hour surgery in Aberdeen hospital.

“Daniel has gone out his way to make sure I am able to return to my studies this year and have the support required. My tutors are looking at the best ways to make the workshops and studios more accessible.â€

Joanna is now looking to the future and using her design skills to carve out a career in the creative industries, specialising in jewellery design.

“I would love to proceed with my jewellery design career and one day create my own line of designs.

“We all face challenges throughout life, in so many shapes and sizes, whether its physical injury, coping with death, stress, depression, illness, burn-out, redundancy - the list of possible challenges are endless that might erupt before us.

“We are all confronted with the raw emotions of fear and loneliness in a multitude of forms. They can strike us anytime, anywhere, anyhow, and often seem unfair and certainly unexpected.

“If my experience has taught me anything it’s the limitless capability of the human spirit. This isn’t the path I wanted my life to take, but nevertheless this is what my life is now. So, I’ll do my best to embrace it and continue on stubbornly, to make the life I dream of.â€
