World Mental Health Day: Mental Health for All

To mark World Mental Health day, ºìÐÓÊÓƵ student counsellor, Katy Yule, looks at some of the many support services and resources available to students at the university.

prompts us to consider the theme of mental health for all.  We recognise that we are all involved in a most extraordinary time of uncertainty, unpredictability, and perhaps a sense of being in-between spaces: beginning, or returning, to university, yet not physically ‘at’ university and engaging online with courses, but not in the spaces you were expecting to be in.

Mental Health for All can be a reminder of what we have in common, and yet naturally we have our own unique reactions to the current ever-changing, ever-restrictive situation.  Perhaps stirring heightened emotions or shutting off a bit of the more emotional responses we may have.

Therefore, we all need individual attention.  Just because we are physically distancing does not mean we have to be socially disconnected - from ourselves or from others.

There are a whole range of support service available to ºìÐÓÊÓƵ, and we would like to share some of the ways you can connect with wellbeing, counselling, inclusion and mental health support at the university, wherever you are on your personal journey.

If you do have a diagnosed mental health problem and would like to find out more about specific individualised support, the Inclusion Team is running a call-back service on Monday 12th October from 2pm – 4pm. You can arrange a call back by emailing – inclusion@rgu.ac.uk.

Counselling and Wellbeing appointments are available to all ºìÐÓÊÓƵ students, daytime and some evenings, with minimal waiting time. Information and guidance on how to book on ASKºìÐÓÊÓƵ is available on the counselling .

Did you know there are mental health and wellbeing resources on ? If you feel flat or demotivated, unsure of yourself or the wider world, lost, isolated, anywhere from tense to overwhelmed, a good place to start can be connecting with yourself first, wherever you are.  You may find support with these clips prepared by our counsellors:

  • Katy talks through three different : revive the body; expanding and going forward; anxious to panicked or overwhelmed
  • David takes us through some practical tips for preparing your body and your environment for
  • Ely takes us on a journey in these two mindfulness visualisations to calm and connect : /

We understand that these are unprecedented and challenging times for the whole ºìÐÓÊÓƵ community and there is support available if you need it. Please make yourself familiar with some of the resources and never be afraid to ask.
