During a series of playful workshops, illustrator Gabrielle Reith will introduce participants to a number of basic techniques used within drawing and painting. Each workshop is designed to help participants lose their inhibitions and explore different materials whilst learning to draw from observation.
Each workshop will start with loose play; involving a string of different drawing exercises designed to help beginners approach their own drawing practice. The course will span a 9-week period and participants are invited to experiment with different mark making techniques; observational drawing being a focus. Throughout, participants can expect to learn about line, shape, space, value, form, texture and colour.
To begin, participants will use graphite and charcoal to conduct simple line drawings before trialling a reduction drawing technique. Participants are then invited to compose line drawings using black and white ink whilst experimenting with different tools such as pens, brushes, wooden sticks and other found objects. Afterwards the group are invited to play with a technique called wash drawing. Application will involve the use graphite, ink, wax or watercolour. Next, the group will try producing artwork that focuses on the use of two colours only while using an assortment of contrasting media.
Sequentially, participants will create full colour drawings that concentrate on the three primary colours. To produce these the group will bring pastels and paint into play. Following this, participants are encouraged to have fun by constructing drawings using only paper, masking tape and paper tape combined with the use of scissors or craft knives. Using collage as a drawing and painting tool participants will be encouraged to create a small series of A4 mixed media pieces. Participants will then use collage as the foundation to create a surface on which they will then draw or paint onto. These will form the base of two final art works, A3 in size.
At the end of the course participants will have the ability to use a range of materials in different ways combined with the energy and courage to play, make 'mistakes' and experiment.
